Watch Sky Poker, Sky Channel 865, it’s seriously fantastic (:
I had a book that was written in the 40s called “Scarne on Cards”. It has some really excellent poker tips (and tips for several other card games, including those not normally associated with gambling).
But, it doesn’t have tips for Texas Hold ‘Em, which is the only kind of poker anyone seems to want to play these days.
Hi Derek,
Developing as a poker player is a pretty tough task, typically chess and backgammon players have the right skills to go on to do very well in the game given their game theory and strategy, inquisitive minds + a strong level of pattern recognition if they are were any excellent that is!
The best advice I have ever read on a poker forum is that Poker is not like a computer game where, you have to beat level 1 to progress to level 2. For example, you could be a loosing player at 10NL -2ptbb/100 over 100K hands and then go and take a shot at 25NL and find that your beating the game for over 8ptbbs/100 over 200K hands. Poker is soo unique that its pretty tough to highlight the best ways to progress…
Update you’re question with some goals and i’ll try to give you some more specific advice. If you clarify alittle more about what stakes you play, online/offline we may be able to offer some better advice. I’ve only been playing profitably for a year myself (in the smallest possible stakes). There are lots of ways to improve you game, talking to better players then you, watching videos, discussion.. etc.
You seem like a very logical person. I’d recommend checking out a book called “The Mathematics of Poker.” If you’re any excellent at math, it should improve your game ten-fold. Leaks and exploiting your opponents will come naturally once you know the mathematics.
On the other hand, if you’re not a math expert, check out this site: http://tinyurl.com/freepokerstrategy
It’s a free site that provides a solid poker strategy, and eve provide you a $50 bankroll to start with.
I’m up to a thousand dollars in my bankroll now. So the strategy really does work.
They basically make money off your rake, so they’re pleased to stake you.
New site started up that’s fantastic if you want to build an early bankroll as they have 4 freerolls an hour during their beta period. I’ve built up a roll of $53 so far and hope to kick ass in their $1000 freeroll on New Years Day.

I suggest playing against your cat. Cats have the best poker faces! You can never tell if they are holding A?, A? or 2?, 7?. It’s very hard to bluff a cat. I told the cat that we sold her to gypsies and her expression still didn’t change!
I don’t suggest purchasing a poker book. If you are like me, you can’t afford a poker book thanks to all the gambling debt that you owe Fluffy.
