How to transition from online to live poker?
I аm a young player аnd look even younger. I played іn thе casino fοr thе first time thе οthеr day аnd wеnt tο thе poker room. Whеn playing аt thе 1/2 NL HE table, i felt i wаѕ playing solid bυt thе οthеr players around mе јυѕt didn’t respect mу bets οr mу play bесаυѕе I looked ѕο young. It felt impossible tο bluff аnd mу continuation bets seemed pointless. Anу tips, advice, аnd hеlр wіll bе appreciated. Thank уου!

Don’t let anyone intimidate you! They are just people as well… get mentally tough and always ALWAYS play YOUR game, not anyone elses… You are probably excellent at reading people by the amount they bet, keep that strong and slowly work reading peoples tells. Don’t depend on them until you feel like you have a read on someone. Work on your own tells, one thing that Phil Ivey does is he kind of lets his mouth hang open, this keeps your face relaxed and keeps you from showing a tell with your face… its not 100 % but it really does help. Excellent luck bud!
Use it to your advantage…. they know that you are 18… so just stop worrying about what they are thinking, and play your best.
It takes time and patience to go from on line poker to live poker in a casino.
The best tip I can give you is, when starting out play the tourneys in the casino first. Many casinos have relatively cheap buy-in tournaments that you can enter to get your feet wet. By doing that you are limiting your monies risked while making the transition. This will help take the pressure off you while you get a feel for the differences involved.
Hope this helps, best of luck at the tables!
Typically, the players at the casino tend to play looser and more passive compared to an online game. Frequently, at the casino, you are in the pot with more than one calling station. When you are playing against opponents that call a lot, your continuation bets and bluffs are less valuable. You don’t want to remove these tools from your game, but adapt them to your opponents. Instead of automatically firing, as you would online, it might be more profitable to check when you don’t have something worth betting. You tend to play more straight forward poker (bet when you have it) with these types of players.
Also, your table image will play a huge role. If, when you first sit down, you pick up a couple hands and are betting or raising a lot, your table image might be that of a loose aggressive player even though you really had aces. You mentioned your appearance as being a reason you didn’t get respect. This could be partially right, but the nature of live poker at the nlhe 1-2, like I said, is a bit more passive and fishier.
The best advice I can give for making the transition from online to live poker is be patient and play your game. In a live game you will only see 30 hands or so an hour. Don’t start playing too many hands just because everyone else is doing it. You can play more hands for a profit when the table is running loose, but don’t get carried away. Make sure you adapt your game to the table. If the table is tight, you can pick up more pots; if it is loose, you sit back and show down some excellent hands. And pay attention. Watch the hands you aren’t playing. Don’t be thinking about banging the cocktail waitress when you should be observing the other players.
Seems like an simple solution. If your bluffs don’t get enough respect, then you’re bluffing too often! It has nothing to do with your age.
As others have said, live is looser. The looser the table, the more money you’ll make by playing tight. The tighter the table, the more money you’ll make playing loose. (This is a generalization.)
Beating live games is WAY, WAY simpler than beating on-line.
I’ve had similar experiences when trying to play live poker after playing mainly online for years. Its just not worth it in the long run. Too many expenses in my opinion to make it profitable. You have to consider rake, tipping, gas money, food, beverage, that adds up to a lot of wasted profit. Check out http://www.isonlinepokerillegal.com/ for a list of sites so you can play online again.
